Most people use AI the way they used search: ask a question, take the answer, move on, remember none of it. It feels productive and teaches almost nothing, the same trap as buying courses you never finish. Used deliberately, though, the exact same tool becomes the most effective tutor ever built, personal to you and available at any hour. The gap between those two outcomes is a handful of moves, and almost nobody makes them.
Learn what solves today’s problem
The first shift is from learning just in case to learning just in time. Most education is stockpiling information you might need someday, which is why so little of it sticks. Flip it: only learn the thing that helps you solve a problem you actually have right now. When the knowledge has an immediate use, retention takes care of itself, because you are about to apply it. So the filter for anything you study becomes one question, what problem does this help me solve, and if you cannot answer it, you are consuming, not learning.
Do not ask AI. Let AI ask you.
Here is the move that changes everything, and it is the opposite of how people use these tools. Instead of asking the model for an answer, have it interview you. Tell it what you are trying to do and where you are stuck, and ask it to question you until it understands your specific situation, then build you a custom learning path for your exact gaps. The model already knows business, code, and strategy in general; what it lacks is context about you, and the fastest way to give it that is to let it pull the context out with questions. This is the same principle behind getting real work out of a model: you get a generic answer until you force it to engage with your specifics.
Study, do not just read
Then actually study what it gives you, which is different from consuming it. Take one small dose at a time rather than trying to swallow everything. Rewrite what matters in your own words, because the act of restating it is what moves it from a page into your head. And pull exactly one action item out of each session, one thing you will do, because a tactic applied beats ten interesting ideas that evaporate. The point is never to tour the material. It is to extract something you can use and then use it.
Why this matters for a team, not just a person
This is not only self-help. In a business, the bottleneck on adopting AI is rarely the tools; it is people leveling up fast enough to use them well. A team that knows how to turn AI into a just-in-time tutor learns any new domain or tool in days instead of quarters, which compounds into a real advantage, because the shared tool was never the edge. The people who pull ahead are not the ones with access to a better model. They are the ones who use the model to get sharper every week, on exactly the problems in front of them. That habit is worth building deliberately, the same way we build everything else in our solutions.
