Google now gives away tools that replace workflows people used to pay thousands for: generate a finished track from a prompt, turn a phone photo of your product into a studio marketing shot, describe an app and get working front-end code, build a small AI tool with no code at all. It is genuinely impressive, and the right question is not how do I use all of this. It is why would they give it away, because the answer tells you where the advantage just moved.

Free is a strategy, not a gift

When a giant hands out capability that used to be expensive, it is commoditizing the layer it does not want anyone to charge for. Raw generation, design, boilerplate code, campaign assets: all of it is becoming a free utility, like electricity from the wall. That is great news and a trap at the same time. Great, because the floor of what a small team can do just rose enormously. A trap, because if the free utility is your whole plan, so is your competitor’s, and a capability everyone has for free differentiates no one. We have made this point from the human side too: the shared tool was never the advantage.

The tell hiding in the best of these tools

Look closely at the standout in Google’s set and the real lesson is right there. A tool trained on the entire internet answers from everything, which means it guesses and fills gaps with things that sound right. The more interesting design does the opposite: you feed it only your own documents, and it answers strictly from those, with a citation back to the exact source, and it does not train on your data. Suddenly the model is not a know-it-all that hallucinates. It is a precise interface to your own knowledge. That difference, a model grounded in what you specifically own versus a model guessing from the average of everyone, is the whole game.

Your data is the part they cannot commoditize

Google can give away the model. It cannot give away your customer history, your internal playbook, the decade of context in your team’s heads, or the specific way your industry actually works. That is the raw material a free tool cannot supply, and it is exactly why AI is going vertical: the durable value is a general model wired tightly into knowledge that is uniquely yours. The tool is the commodity. The grounding is the moat, and it is why the paid work is in the integration, not the model.

What to actually do

Use the free tools, all of them, with both hands. Just do not confuse using them with having a strategy. The strategy is to take that cheap, powerful capability and point it at something no competitor can rent: your own data, your own workflow, your own domain. That is what we build in our solutions, and it is the one advantage that gets stronger, not weaker, as the tools keep getting free.
